Alterations and additions to a heritage house in Melrose

A steeply gabled heritage house on a mature Melrose stand was altered and extended without losing the character that made it worth keeping. The garden front gained a deep verandah and new dormers under matching slate, and the entrance side a face-brick stair tower with a tall arched steel window and a gabled timber porch over a red front door.

Inside, the new stair with its wrought-iron balustrade rises under a rooflight, with a glazed wine store tucked beneath it.
